どうも、いちあるです。
皆さんは、英語を使って何か「客観的」に物事を伝えることはありますか？例えば、「○○だといわれている」と「○○ということになっている」とか。
今日はそんな客観的に、噂や事実などを報告する表現「It is said that」について解説をしていきたいと思います。
この表現、かなり使い方としては便利な表現なのですが、時制をいつにするかで少しコツが必要になるので、そのあたりも含めて解説をしていきたいと思います。
○○といわれている、「It is said that」
実際はその事実が本当かウソかはわからない、だけれど「周りからそういわれてるよね…」というときは「It is said that」を使います。
- It is said that laughter is the best medicine.
（笑いは最良の薬だと言われています。） - It is said that she is the most talented artist in the city.
（彼女はその街で最も才能のあるアーティストだと言われています。） - It is said that the old house is haunted.
（その古い家には幽霊が出ると言われています。）
- また、that節中の主語（赤文字）を文の先頭に持ってくることもできます。
この場合は、to不定詞を使って表現します。この場合、意味は上記と変わりません。
- Laughter is said to be the best medicine.
- She is said to be the most talented artist in the city.
- The old house is said to be haunted.
that節中の主語を文の先頭に持ってくる場合、to不定詞を使って「said to be」といった表現になる。
「that」節をとる文でも同じ表現が可能
実は、「It is said that」以外にもthat節を取りやすい動詞が多くあります。
例えば、よく言われるのが「伝達や要求、思考や認識」を表す動詞が「that」節を取りやすいといわれています。
正直、例を挙げるときりがないのですが、主に以下のような動詞があります。
- It is believed that
- It is rumored that
- It is known that
- It is thought that
- It is expected that
It is believed that honesty is the best policy.
（誠実さが最良の方針であると信じられています。）
It is rumored that they will release a new product next month.
（彼らが来月新製品を発売すると噂されています。）
It is known that cats are independent animals.
（猫は独立した動物であると知られています。）
It is thought that exercise is good for both body and mind.
（運動が体と心の両方に良いと思われています。）
It is expected that the company will announce its earnings report tomorrow.
（その会社が明日、収益報告を発表すると期待されています。）
また、この場合でもthat節中の主語を文の先頭に持ってくることができます。

「It is said that」の時制での変化
実はこの表現は過去の噂ばなしとかを表すことも可能なんだ！
上記で説明した通り「It is said thad」は現在の時点おける、現在の噂話に対しての表現になります。
では過去の場合の表現はどのようなものがあるか、丁寧に見ていきたいと思います。
噂話をしてるのは今、噂話は過去のこと
この場合の文構造は以下の通りです。
「It is said that」 + 主語 + (過去形の動詞）～
例文を挙げます。
- It is said that Mozart composed over 600 works during his lifetime.
（モーツァルトは生涯で600曲以上の作品を作曲したと言われています。） - It is said that the Titanic sank after hitting an iceberg.
（タイタニック号は氷山に衝突した後に沈んだと言われています。）
この場合も、「that」節中の主語を文頭に持ってくることができます。
その場合の文構造は以下の通りです。
主語 + is(are) + siad + 「to have」+ beenなどの過去分詞～
以下例文です。
- Shakespeare is said to have written many famous plays.
- The Titanic is said to have sunk after hitting an iceberg.
噂話をしてるのは過去、噂話も過去のこと
文書構造は以下の通りです。
「It was（were） said that」 + 主語 + (過去形の動詞）～
- It was said that Einstein discovered the theory of relativity.
(アインシュタインが相対性理論を発見したと言われていました。) - It was said that the pyramids were built by ancient Egyptians.
(ピラミッドは古代エジプト人によって建てられたと言われていました。)
「that」節中の主語を文頭に持ってくると以下のような文構造になります。
主語 + was(were) + siad + to + 動詞の原形
- Einstein was said to discovere the theory of relativity.
- The pyramids were said to build by ancient Egyptians.
噂話をしてるのは過去、噂話はもっと過去のこと
最後ですが、上記の場合の文構造はいかになります。
「It was（were） said that」 + 「to had」+ beenなどの過去分詞～
例文は以下の通りです。
- It was said that dinosaurs had roamed the Earth millions of years ago. (恐竜は何百万年も前に地球を歩いていたと言われていました。)
- It was said that humans had invented the wheel thousands of years ago. (人類は何千年も前に車輪を発明したと言われていました。)
「that」節中の主語を文頭に持ってくると以下のような文構造になります。
主語 + was(were) + siad + 「to have」+ beenなどの過去分詞～
例文は以下の通りです。
- Dinosaurs were said to have roamed the Earth millions of years ago.
- Humans were said to have invented the wheel thousands of years ago.
